Portrait of My Lover as a Sumac Branch

Portrait of My Lover as a Sumac Branch

Many-leaved, limber as though made
of bamboo, watch it flex
and tremble on the wind.

For each other, examples of upright
habits, perennial nature.

And back for another spring, taller.

Admire its imaginative branching,
top tendril reaching up
in the white oak’s shadow.

Bend, bend further, it’s a whip,
a lash, storm.
